Course Description

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, but when they occur in our dental office we must be prepared.  The response must be a coordinated effort between the doctor and staff. 

This course will aid you in preparing your office for emergencies by outlining ways to prevent emergencies, recognize them when they occur, and treat them.

Dr. Naftalin will review procedures and protocols that can be implemented in your office.  He will review: the drugs and pharmacology of your emergency kit; how to improve communication during an emergency; and the management of emergency situations that can occur in a dental office.

Learner Outcomes

Upon Completion, the Participant Shall Be Able To:

  • Put in place protocols to prevent medical emergencies
  • Engage in closed-loop communication
  • Understand the drugs in the medical emergency kit
  • Know how to treat:
    • Syncope
    • Hyperventilation
    • Foreign body aspiration
    • Allergy and anaphylaxis
    • Acute asthmatic episode
    • Hypoglycemic shock
    • Seizures
    • Chest pain

The Participant Will Have a Thorough Understanding Of:

  • How to prevent and recognize a medical emergency
  • Closed-loop communication
  • The pharmacology of the various drugs in a medical emergency kit
  • How to respond to various medical emergencies that can occur in a dental office

The Participants Will Be Able To:

  • Describe closed-loop communication
  • Recognize and treat:
    • Syncope
    • Hyperventilation
    • Foreign body aspiration
    • Allergic reactions
    • Acute asthmatic episodes
    • Hypoglycemic shock
    • Seizures
    • Chest pain

You Will Learn:

  • How to effectively prepare your dental team and office for a medical emergency
  • How to communicate and work as a team during an emergency
  • How to manage and treat medical emergencies in your dental office
  • How to effectively debrief your dental team after a medical emergency

Registration, Refund and Cancellation policies

All registrations must be done online at learn.llu.edu. At-the-door registration is not advisable as the online registration process must still be performed by the participant. Courses are canceled or confirmed by Loma Linda University School of Dentistry two weeks prior to course date. Please register early to avoid course cancellations. All dental courses are approved for continuing education credit on an hour-for-hour basis by the California State Board of Dental Examiners and the Academy of General Dentistry, up to a maximum of 8 educational units per day. Please refer to the course information for the number of units.

Continuing education programs offered by Loma Linda University School of Dentistry are intended to be for review purposes only. Additional training may be necessary to become fully proficient in any area or technique within dentistry.

A full credit card refund will be issued if a cancellation by an attendee is received within five days following the day of the course. We cannot issue a cash refund for credit card transactions. Course registration fees can also be transferred to other programs upon the request of the registrant.
